in an epic case of 'hahahaha ooooops!' todd akin said the worst ever thing this week. and of course the internets. is. talkin. bout. it. (and republicans in general.)

* this one is particularly good so i'm setting it on its own...

i could post 18 bazillions more links, but i'll spare you all that underlined text.

i didn't reeeeally want to talk about this. because it is insane and so rage-inducing and beyond comprehension that i'm all 'nooooooooooo!' about blorging on the subject. but. then again.people who refuse to call themselves feminists, even, are posting alllll about it in a mad fervor.

this is one of a million and ten things that being a feminist means to me: believing that people in power positions should be educated about the things that are asserting power over. being outraged that there are people in 2012 who do not know the most basic details of how the female reproductive system works who are attempting to assert any level of power or control over those female reproductive systems. i don't think that is a radical point of view.

oh! and also a point for BETTER SEX EDUCATION IN THE US. (and we ain't sooo wise here either, canada. i do have a friend who believed that a headstand after intercourse was functional birth control. a sexually active friend. and a pile o' other crazy ideas about how our baby-makers work. that is to say that this whole thing, sadly sadly, did not surprise me. heaviest sigh.)

you might remember there being a little teaser last week?

yeah!

on learning and unlearning. or. the impossibility of the latter.

i am just a wee baby of feminism. this is true. i am so so new and all a-stumbles on my under-formed feminist-legs. like a baby deer learning to walk. (i think maybe baby deer should be the blorg mascott... but that's another issue. a cute issue.) but the thing about it is: once you know, you can't un-know. you know?

(haha!)

and so that is where i am. i may not have the best language to argue my (our) case. but. i know i need to argue it anyway. because i have started to see it. and now i can't help but see it all the time.* to see that the united states is a terror-fest for women, despite the fact that it isn't as obvious as not-being-allowed-an-education, or being-forced-to-cover-our-bodies-in-a-complete-way... to see how many women and girls i know who are so deeply damaged by years of being told certain things about what it means to be a woman. to see how many men and boys i know who are so deeply damaged by years of being told certain things about what it means to be a man.

and sometimes i wish i didn't see it. sometimes i wish i could laugh at things like 'shit girls say' and not feel sick to my stomach knowing that there is something so deeply ingrained and flawed in the way we mock eachother. sometimes i wish my heart didn't hurt so much so often.

but that would mean i was going along blissfully ignorant. and i no longer have that option. and i suspect there are those amongst you, readers, who are hesitant to open up to the knowing. i can't blame you. it's hard. and there is no going backwards. so. i get it. if you're hesitant to join me... but i hope you will anyways. because we all know that struggle and hardship are what make us stronger humans. or something. and we can only improve things if we see them in the first place.

tra la la.

{our beloved hillary clinton drinks to the feminist of the week! photo from international business times.}

feminist of the week for this extra-special my-birthday-week has been a long time coming. sarah rankin!!! roommate extraordinaire. and feminist educator to the masses. she introduced me to feministe and shakesville, and she taught me to argue and fight when i feel i need to. she also explained this sad-truth of not being able to go back once you're in. and we had a cool talk about consent and knowledge, which maybe i'll have her guest-write about one day when she's done with school for the term... yeah?!

*it is, of course, important not to get toooo carried away, and let it ruin your life completely. and so. kittens.

have thoughts on the disgusting, ignorant, rage-making sack of skin that is rush limbaugh and all the ugly anger and hatred he represents? i do. but i make an effort not to use much profanity on this blorg, so i guess we'll have to talk about something else today.

(but you can always email him your opinions here: ElRushbo@eibnet.com, or if you're feeling particularly bold and articulate, call his show here: 1-800-282-2882. not that it's likely to get through, you know, the years of built up idiocy that is his skull. but. whatever.)

anyways!!! welcome to a particularly rage-y feminist friday! oh man are there some asshats out there i'd like to punch square in the shin...

but then again.

*care packages might be the answer.

(from a new blog i've just discovered... the crunk feminist collective.)

and finally, because we have been rolling around in so much fashion here on this blorg, so many tiny bodies... i wanted to take a moment to remind myself and you that life is about a lot more than looking 'good' in pictures. (i just listened to a girl from my office floor throw up her breakfast in the stall next to me in what was clearly a way she was used to doing. and it was so hard not to cry. and i wish i had the courage to say something...)

my grandmothers were stunning women with legs that were not sticks, with stomachs that were not rock-hard. one like me, and one like my sister...
my mother has laugh lines for days.
my sister has legs that can take her from the top of scotland to the bottom of england.
i have hands that can open any jar.
we are real people and we are lucky and we are strong and we have full lives. so i will never be able to wear a body-con dress without my little tummy showing. so what.

remember that. please.

sexist saturday (feminist friday)

sorry about missing yesterday. sorry. it's just. you know. fashion makes me happy and recently reading re feminism has been making me bonkers. so. i haven't felt like talking about the grossness, and instead i have been focusing on the prettiness.

but. feminism must.

so here's a great little piece. re: what's happening to women's reproductive rights down in the states. i know i'm not from there, blah blah, but an attack on women is an attack on women, and frankly we're supposed to be the safe free spaces, and we're failing, and those neighbours of ours are awful close to us, and we up here should not be complacent. nay! nay.

*here! read smart words.

xoxo
